The Stonehouse occupies a lovely village location with views to the surrounding countryside. It is just over 2 miles away from the thriving village of Credenhill, with its school post office, takeaways and village shop. Less than 7 miles away is the historical cathedral city of Hereford with everything you would expect from a City; excellent shops, cafes and restaurants, hotels, schools, colleges, leisure facilities and cider museum. It is within easy reach of the interesting border town of Hay on Wye, 14 miles, famous for its bookshops and International Literary Festival and also gateway to the dramatic scenery of the Black Mountains. There are good road connections to the M50 at Ross on Wye, 20 miles, and rail links to London Paddington and Birmingham New Street are found at Hereford.
The Stonehouse is an attractive and versatile timber frame property with a stone front which, in 1603, was a busy village Inn and then became a farm in the 18th century. The property is not listed and has undergone updating and extending over the years. Numerous period features remain throughout the property adding to its great charm including beams, exposed stone walls, doors and examples of wattle and daub. The reception hall has a flagstone floor, exposed timbers and wattle and daub panel. Additional character is provided by the salting slab and a window, covered in the eaves for two centuries, which has been moved to the hall. A door leads into the bathroom with a white suite and built- in cupboard. Stairs lead down to the study with a large window overlooking the garden and views beyond. At one end of the study is an exposed stone wall and doorway into the fifth bedroom. This room was originally the cow- shed and has exposed stone walls, ceiling beam and shuttered window. From the hall are steps up to a reception room where the exposed timber framing is very much in evidence. This delightful room has an unused stone and brick fireplace with hearth. A small ledge- and- braced door takes you up into the old hay-- loft with wood floor and exposed timbers which is now used as a bedroom. The sitting room is a warm and inviting space with one side being the original timber frame external wall and the rest being the stone extension built in the 1800s. The old front door leads out to the front garden. There is a lovely stone inglenook fireplace, including old bread oven, with a wood burning stove. The kitchen/breakfast room has a range of fitted pine doors and wall units, stainless steel sink and space for cooker and dishwasher. The large utility room has plenty of storage space and room for washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer. Off the utility are a shower room and separate loo. The rear hall/lobby leads to the double guest bedroom and access to the garden. A good size loft above the lobby is plastered and boarded and provides useful additional space. Stairs from the sitting room lead up to two bedrooms. The appealing master bedroom has stripped floor boards and is heavily beamed yet remains a lovely light room with a brick surround fireplace with ornamental metal grate. The further bedroom is again a very charming room with wood floor, timbers and vaulted ceiling.
The Stonehouse is set in the heart of the village and is approached off the lane onto parking in front of the house and attached garage. The front garden is mainly laid to lawn with beds of mixed plantings and partially bordered by holly hedging the walls are clothed in roses and jasmine with an espalier pear tree adding interest. Access to the rear garden is by a wooden field gate to one side wide enough for vehicles and to the other side, a metal pedestrian gate. The rear garden is a delightful well stocked garden with lawns and beautiful mixed borders, covered arches and fruit trees. By the house is a stone path and the old well and a large summer house sits to the side of the garden. Towards the rear of the garden is a sizeable vegetable plot and hen house. A field gate opens onto the 2.1 acres of paddocks with stock proof fencing, 2 stables and small hay barn.
